One of the manâs measly flock was shrieking and writhing on the ground between us. With the sheepâs bleating, the angry shepherd, and the rock poking me in the ass, it took a moment to deduce what had happened. But as I slowly stood from the uncomfortable ground, I realized the object that I had impacted was the sheep. The creature slowly regained its footing and clung to its human caretaker. My eyes slowly traversed the length of the staff, which was thrust so close to my face as to cross my eyes. Unfortunately, the figure holding the crooked instrument was not of the old and wise variety often recorded in the Bible. Instead, before me stood the tallest Nazarene yet observed. Dark, shaggy hair rested upon broad shoulders, practically bursting from his primitive wrappings. He alternated between nearly growling at my face and peering down intermittently at my clutched binoculars. This couldnât be it. This couldnât be the end of everyone I loved. I scrambled to think of an Aramaic statement to remedy the situation.
âPlease forgive my accident. I am sorry for any impact on your animal. Please allow me to go home for funds to compensate you for any damage,â I gently requested in my first Aramaic uttering in the ancient world. Somehow, I had imagined my first words would be under better circumstances. After a long pause, the man, without lowering his staff, retorted in a forceful tone.
âWho are you? Iâve walked these hills my whole life, and I have surely never seen you.â He paused and momentarily glared again at the binoculars. âAnd . . . what is that? Is that an idol?â
I digested his inquiries and searched for any answers to appease his appetite for truth. Sweat was now visibly dripping from my face, and my legs were slightly shaking. These physical manifestations were surely not helping the believability of my case. I searched for a name to provide. I couldnât say Jesus. Not before any of the memory insertions. Finally, as the silence began to weigh palpably, I could think of only one culturally appropriate name.
âI am Amir. I am a traveler by way of Sephorris. I deal in strange goods from faraway lands. These are an import from the far east.â Initially his body language seemed to relax, but as he again spoke in a deep gravelly voice, my hopes evaporated.
âAmir. Hmm. I think you should come with me to town. The elders will want to meet you and discuss these details.â He slightly gestured with the staff back toward Nazareth.
No, no, no! I silently imploded as he herded me like another member of the flock. For the first time in months, I reflexively turned to the sky and silently appealed to the Lord above. Having my confident control stripped away gave room again for such ridiculous musings. As is always the case with prayer, it mattered not. Without another immediate option, I trudged along in front of the hulking figure and raged against the reality.
